Leash Reactivity Case Study

Poor leash behavior can be a big problem for dog owners. A dog that pulls on the leash might get away from their owner and run away or they might pull down their owner and cause injury. Sometimes, a dog will only pull in response to certain distractions, like other dogs, cats, birds, etc. This tends to be an even bigger problem because if the dog gets loose, they might attack whatever has caught their attention. We call this leash reactivity.

I recently had the opportunity to work with a dog named Gabby, whose owner was concerned about her leash reactivity. Gabby was especially reactive toward cats and other dogs, and it was becoming a chore instead of a pleasure to take her for a walk. When dogs exhibit this type of behavior, the owner develops an understandable lack of trust and an increased level of stress. My job is to counter this negativity with positive reinforcement training, using proper leash handling techniques and effective communication.

Gabby, specifically, was a great dog. During the in-home consultation, she was relaxed, well-behaved, and didn’t even jump on me when I first came through the door. She showed no signs of aggression or anxiety, and she was able to occupy herself in her crate while I chatted with her owner.

Gabby’s problem, specifically, was selective hearing. She would only listen to her owner when it suited her. Our goal became promoting basic obedience, thus promoting focus, so she would respond to her owner’s commands reliably, both at home and during walks.

We started the basic obedience training immediately, working with Gabby first in the home, away from the dogs and cats that usually catch her eye. We began training her outside only after she showed consistency at home. We used the proper leash handling techniques I mentioned earlier, and she soon began showing behavioral improvement.

With a skilled trainer and committed owner, any canine behavior problem can be solved. Gabby is now walking well on the leash, needing only gentle reminders to keep her focus on her owner. I can achieve the same results for your pet.
